Tabs for Tots
Helma Court No. 64, Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America, Springfield, Massachusetts started collecting aluminum tabs in November 1989. This project enabled them to extend their support of the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children. The tabs were collected and brought to a metal recycling facility where they were redeemed.
Since then, Connecticut Freemasons have brought the program to their Blue Lodges and accomplished two purposes: first to enable the Shriners Hospitals to purchase medical equipment and protheses, and second, to act as an outreach program to contact brothers. The simple step of bending off these tabs does not affect the regular redemption of the can and by combining each small collection, thousands of pounds of aluminum are turned into thousands of dollars.
Masons have made cans in which to collect the tabs, depositing their cans at lodge meetings or having a brother stop by and pick them up. Even contests at businesses have produced astounding quantities. In this way all brothers and families are encouraged to participate in this worthy endeavor to support the free care gven at Shriners Burn Centers and Orthopedic Care Hospitals.
